The capital city of Malaga is surrounded by 28 Axarquian
towns and villages, some 7 kilometres inland from Torre del Mar and only
a 10 minutes drive away .Malaga is a beautiful city particularly around
the cathedral and the port and has something for everyone
History at your feet
Velez, one of the small villages is well worth a visit.
You can wander around the 'villa' lose your way in the network of cobbled
streets and narrow alleys and discover some of the history of Axarquia.
Visit churches of San Juan and Santa Maria as you wind your way up to
the fort to catch the breath taking views over the mountains, the valley
and the sea.
There are plenty of tiny villages with clusters of white washed houses,
one Benamarcarra perches on the mountain top with planes taking off below
it from the tiny Axarquia Aerodrome.
The 'villa' is fast becoming popular with the British ex-pats, the sound
of English voices blends with the sounds of a rural village with goats
and chickens hapilly chattering.
New plans for the centre
The main centre of Velez is rapidly becoming a tourist attraction.
Several hotels are planned as well as a lavish park to include wooded
areas, a petanque court, a pool, and plenty of children's play areas.
There are also many local shops to browse around and Kay in her second
hand furniture shop is well worth a visit to find a bargain.
The perfect beach
If you prefer the smell of the sea the Torre del Mar is
ideal. Torre del Mar is a busy seaside town with a pretty beach promenade
over 4 kms long.
It is dotted with chiringuitos to refresh you as you stroll along the
beach
Enjoying the clear mountain views which surround the Axarquian coast.
Seaside fun
During the summer months there are plenty of amusements
for all the family and lots of activities for children. Many bars and
cafes are along the beach offering Chinese, Italian, Spanish, Mexican
and English cuisine.
If you fall in love with the area as many people do there are an abundance
of Estate Agents through the centre of the larger towns, offering plenty
of villas, apartments and fincas/cortigos.
If shopping is your passion then there are plenty of furniture, pottery,
clothes shops and Surecut hairdressers. The market is on a Thursday and
is large and colourful as all Spanish markets are.
