Playa Canela is the beach of Isla Canela which is situated in the South West corner of Andalucia at the mouth of the River Guardiana which is the natural border between the Portuguese Algarve and Spain. This coast is known as Costa de la Luz translated to Coast of Light, and boasts long unspoiled sandy beaches with great swimming and fishing and beautiful sunsets. Still very Spanish, the local industry is fishing and farming and nearby Ayamonte town holds many traditional festivals. There are many good restaurants and tapas bars offering exceptional value both in Playa Canela and Ayamonte town. Golfers will rejoice in the amount of choice they have within a short 'drive' from Ayamonte, in both Spain and Portugal, the closest being Par 72 just 2 kms away. The weather is warm all year round but can get very hot in the summer months

Walking brakes. Isla Canela is the ideal place to take advantage of many of the beautiful walks in this yet unspoilt area of Spain. If you choose to walk by the beach, the river or within the town of Ayamonte you wont be disappointed. I can provide detailed or pre booked guided walks for the more serious walkers. For example, we start from the Paseo de la Rivera, next to it, we find the Coronación Square, which is adorned with a beautiful and traditional fountain. We can also visit the yachting harbour. Taking the nearby streets, we arrive to the Casa Grande, which is the cultural centre of the city with some exhibitions, the municipal library and an auditorium where numerous cultural and musical events are hold throughout the year; the beauty of the house itself and their patios are worth while. Quite near, we can find the church of La Merced. If we go on Huelva Street, we will arrive at Laguna Square, where we can also find the City Hall. From this square we can see the church of Nuestra Señ

History The town of Ayamonte derived its name from the terms 'Aya', which is a Iberian word meaning 'Monte' (hill in English). According to Díaz Santos, M.L. (1990), we find the name of Ayamonte in the historical and geographical Chronicle by Ahmed Mohamed Arrasi, in the 10th century. From the Roman domain we have some archaeological rests in Isla Canela and the old castle, on which an Arabian fortress was built later. In the 70's its ruins were demolished and the parador 'Costa de la Luz' was built. With this we lost the most important and ancient historic-artistic inheritance of Ayamonte.
