Enjoy a relaxing and refreshing get-away vacation in a new & spacious oceanfront cottage on a private island off the coast of Down-East Maine. If you want to truly experience the peace & harmony of "old Maine"... then this is definitely the place for you! Sit back and enjoy breath-taking sunrises over nearby islands as you sip your morning coffee on the deck and watch the small lobstering village slowly come to life. Live lobsters are delivered to you by local lobstermen and fresh bakery goods are also delivered to you by a local bakery.
This large (1000 sq/ft), 2-story cottage comfortably sleeps 6 people, is charmingly furnished, and is ideal for two families to share. The 1st floor has a queen bed in one bedroom, and a queen & 2 twin beds in the other. A full bathroom is accessed from the common hallway with a large deck overlooking the ocean. The second floor has a large dining table (seats 6) and a fully equipped kitchen. A large, open living area with an easy chair and two couches (one is a fold-out double bed) that opens out to a deck overlooking the ocean and outer islands.
Watch fishermen steaming out to haul and land lobsters from this newly constructed summer home overlooking picturesque Penobscot Bay. A 3-minute walk to the harbor wharf and a 5-minute walk to a beautiful (usually deserted), sandy crescent beach with a volleyball net at one end and bon-fire pit on the other. A larger sandy cresent beach is just a 20-minute walk (or a 7-minute bike ride) along a dirt road that features sweeping views of Criehaven Island (~ 1 mile kayak trip) ... the setting and inspiration of acclaimed writer Elisabeth Ogilvie's "Bennett's Island" book series. Many of these books are in the cottage library for your reading pleasure.
Explore the many hiking trails to nearby bird sanctuaries, Hemlock forests, rocky ledge points, and other beautiful swimming beaches. Take a boat ride to Matinicus Rock Lighthouse to see the Puffin colonies and the site where the famous heroine lightkeeper, Abbie Burgess, once worked and lived. Expect spectacular views of the milky way, planets, stars, and satellites, as Matinicus Island is far from city lights. A nearby gift shop features island crafts & novelties. A weekly flea market has bakery items, sandwiches, soft drinks, & island crafts. Extra provisions (including beer & wine) can be delivered by plane to a landing strip from the mainland grocery store for a small fee. Moorings are available and can be reserved ahead. Transportation to and from the island is accomplished by private ferry boats, airplane, and personal boat. This Cottage is a true remote getaway in every sense. Maine-ly ... you can expect plenty of Peace and Quiet.
