LORO CIUFFENNA is a medieval castle town of 900 people on the slopes of the Pratomagno (part of the Appenines, peak 1596m) between Florence and Arezzo. The Romanesque Pieve di Gropina and the old bridge date from the 8th-11th centuries, the flour-mill, parish church and other buildings from the 11th-14th. The altitude, ca. 335 m., is perfect all year round: in the winter its above the fog and below the snow; in the summer it is cool and breezy in the evening, hot and dry during the day. It is never as humid as in Florence. The Comune (township) comprises other villages as well, with a total pop. of 5000. There's a weekly outdoor market, a monthly summer antique fair, an April Trout Festival, a November Chestnut Festival, in August a String Quartet festival, and in September the Festa del Perdono. 10 km. from the VALDARNO Exit [south of Florence] of the A1 Autostrada, it is most easily reached by car. The nearest airport is Florence (then Pisa, Bologna, Rome); the nearest train stations, on the Florence-Rome line, are in Montevarchi and S. Giovanni Valdarno (ca. 13 km). By train from Rome one can reach Arezzo in less than 2 hours, and take a bus fromthere to Loro (28 km) or continue by train to Montevarchi for buses and taxis.
