Ferreirola is a tiny whitewashed hamlet set at 1000 metres in the high Alpujarra mountains south of Granada with spectacular views and wonderful ancient paths for walkers. It is part of a cluster of 7 arab-style villages with plentiful natural springs and olive and almond trees on the terraced hill sides. The silence is remarkable, just the sound of sheep bells and crickets in summer. The spring flowers are outstanding and the pure air is famous throughout europe. There is a local small industry of ham-drying and the villages have tiny shops selling rugs and distinctive blue and white pottery but are free from the excesses of tourism although there are a good number of bars and restaurants serving local home-cooked food. This is one of the few areas left in Spain where you still receive a free tapas (snack) with your drink and the prices of meals are extremely reasonable. Some local people speak a little english and they are very patient and welcoming to foreigners.
The climate is ideal with over 320 days of sunshine each year . August is the hottest month with temperatures of 30C or more..

There are no shops or bars in the village but it is a short walk to the next village which has several bars and restaurants - including one for vegetarians. In nearby Pitres (4km) there are basic shops and a bank and an outdoor swimming pool and a Friday market. There is also horseriding and mountain biking available. It is around 1h15m drive to Granada with the wonders of the Alhambra or the beach at the Costa Tropical, but essentially this is a place to come to step off the modern world for a while and enjoy nature and tranquility at their best.

The house is around 500 years old with beams and stone floors, simple yet comfortable and has a beautiful covered balcony off the living room and an enormous private roof terrace with
360 degree views. There is mains electricity and gas cooking.There is a shower room with plentiful hot water, a comfortable double bedroom with a twin room leading off it, a rustic but well equipped kitchen and a huge lounge diner with a woodburning stove for cool evenings and a large supply of books in english.

No cars are allowed in the narrow streets but there is parking 2 minutes walk away in the village square which has a church, an old washhouse and a fountain. A short walk from the square takes you to Ferreirola´s famous fizzy mineral water spring set among fields of almond blossom. There are paths just outside the door that enable you to walk as far (or as little) as you wish without having to use the car to get to them.

The house can be rented by the week or for longer periods and is suitable for 2-4 people although the second bedroom is reached by passing through the first.
